LEARNING DISABILITIES

A learning disability affects the way a person understands information and how they communicate. It affects how they learn and develop new skills. Approximately 1.5m people in the UK have one. This means they can have difficulty:

  • Understanding new or complex information
  • Learning new skills
  • Coping independently

It is thought that up to 350,000 people have severe learning disabilities. This figure is increasing.

People with a learning disability often find it difficult to cope on their own with day-to-day tasks and may need support to develop the skills they need to live independently.

A learning disability can be mild, moderate or severe. Some people with a mild learning disability can talk easily and look after themselves, but take a bit longer than usual to learn new skills. Others may not be able to communicate at all and have more than one disability. These will determine the support they will need.

People with learning disabilities can exhibit behaviour that challenges – which is likely to endanger them or others – but there is always a reason behind it that can be addressed.

With our support, most people with a learning disability can enjoy meaningful, independent and fulfilling lives. Our support is tailored to individual service user, to promote our clients’ independence and a meaningful life.
